(i) London had hundreds of small factories and workshops. It was a city of clerks,shopkeepers, skilled and semi-skilled artisans, soldiers and servants, casual labourers,street vendors, etc. (ii) Apart from London dockyards, five major types of small industries employed large number of people. (iii) During the First World War (1914-18) London began manufacturing motor cars and electrical goods. Hundreds of large factories sprang up employing thousands of workers.
