Many of the Himalayan rivers which existed even before the Himalayan ranges were uplifted. The gorges of the Indus, the Satluj, the Alakananda clearly indicate that these rivers are older than mountains. During the upliftment of Himalayas, their banks rose steeply while the beds went lower, thus cutting deep gorges in the Himalayas. Thus, the rivers of North India are typical examples of antecedent drainage.
