We lived in 7a when we had figs.....they won't grow up in 5a as we would need a big greenhouse.  They need well drained fertile area in 8 hrs of sun....test your PH....you might need to adjust that.......you also might need mitrogen 8-8-8 or 10=10=10 but only after you test your soil.....they dry out long before you grass they need 1 inch of water a week and depending where you live maybe more.
