At this time of year, squash bugs are usually the culprit. They inject a poison when they bite into the stalk, leaf, or vine of a plant. If you have them, you probably also have vine borers (not in the butternuts; their solid stem prevents borer infestation). There are fungus, bacterial, and viral causes for wilt, but squash bugs are probably the most common cause.
