Answer :

The lemon tree is unusual, the roots are generally in an umbrella pattern, with the main root quite stunted. Take the height of the tree devide that by 5, and you will have the average depth of the main root. Thus a 20' high tree will only have a 4' main root, but may have 25 to 30' of roots extending in all directions of the tree itself.
