How can I train my outdoor cat to be an indoor cat?

My kids found a kitten outside and we took it into our family. She's been with us for 5 years, and enjoys spending most of her time outside. She's been bothering the neighbors lately. I'd like to keep her inside, but she has a real wild streak and hates being locked up. How can I train her to stay inside? When I've tried before, as soon as anyone goes to the door she tries to bolt. I really don't know what to do.

You can start by crating the cat and placing her food, water and litter box in along with a comfy place to lie down. Or better yet, as long as she uses the litter box, confine her to a room with all her goodies. Keep visiting her so she;s not alone all the time. When you feel she's ready you can increase the free area. Purchase scratching post to satisfy her need to climb and perch high up. You and the famiy should be careful of open doors. If the cat attempts to run out, squirt some water at her from the outside - it will teach her that outdoors is not pleasant. Also make sure window screens are secure and she can't escape that way. Grow some catnip or wheat grass to satisfy her need to munch on greens. Be patient, confine her to a room when you must.
