I would say that some (many?) parents are irrationally fearful of many things with regard to their children. Given the importance of said children, I can understand the motivation. Personally, I try to make level-headed decisions regarding my daughter’s welfare. Works about 98% of the time. I think the solution for wildly over protective parents is to educate themselves on the topics they are afraid of. Many do not and are driven by (paranoid) what they see on the nightly local news.
