Try His Dark Materials, a trilogy by Philip Pullman. The Golden Compass is volume 1. My husband and I did the entire HP series as a read-aloud in weekly installments that spanned many months. We did the Pullman series the same way and enjoyed it very much, even though I would have liked to fix the ending.
