To some degree, yes. Men are something like 10 times more likely to murder someone than a woman, so it is always a bit surprising when you hear about a woman committing a violent crime. Statistically it just isn’t as prevalent as it is among men. So, the simple fact that it is slightly unusual is bound to raise interest. Women are also less likely than men to commit crimes of a sexual nature, which is probably part of the reason that someone like Karla Homolka gets so much attention. Not only is it a violent crime, but sexual as well. Just statistically unlikely to be crimes carried out by women. Not impossible, obviously, just far less likely. The media runs with anything that they think might be interesting to the public, this isn’t unique.
