.Define the job you are seeking. Many people do not take the time to understand the details about the position they are interested in. When you do, you are better able to tailor your resume to the specific needs of the prospective employer.
.Write out your Objective Statement. Identify the type of work you are seeking and how you can meet the employer's needs. Keep this to one sentance.
.Highlight your work experience. Again, keep in mind that you should tailor your qualifications to the the position you are seeking. Whenever possible, list your experience in terms of accomplishments and achievements rather than tasks and responsibilities. Show your success.
.The employer will want to know about your educational background, so present this information in reverse chronological order regardless of the style or format you choose for your resume.
.Include any additional information that DIRECTLY relates to the job you want. This could be professional affiliations, honors, awards, publications, etc.
.References - don't even bother putting this on your resume. You don't list them anyway and if an employer requests them, you can provide them at that time.
.Pull all of the information together in a single (if possible) piece of quality paper using a single font to make reading as easy as possible. This is not a time to get creative. At the very top of the sheet of paper, provide your name and address, phone number and email address. Use the order indicated in the steps above for each of the resume sections (Objective, Experience, Education, and Other).
.Check and double check for accuracy. Proofread everything from your street address to your dates of employment.
.Print your resume using a good laser or inkjet printer.
.Prepare a cover letter and envelope that match and you are set!
