answer:Ok so this is kind of absurd that I’m going to answer it. But maybe one day someone will look up the same exact printer problem. MP495 (Black Ink Only Solutions) 1. Open [Canon MP495 Series] 2. Click [Settings] 3. Open [Utilities>Open Printer Utility] 4. Click the Scroll Bar Select [Ink Cartridge Settings] 5. Select [Black Ink Only or Color Only or Both] Phew!

I heard there was a recent scandal with Epson that they mistakenly read cartridges ... than giving it a good shake (you don't want to make a huge mess, or screw your printer).

Open the document in black ink ... printer should now print. Few people will notice that your black is slightly off (I know from experience). ;)
