Is there a good substitute for buttermilk?

1 Answer

Answer :

An equal amount of milk, with a tablespoon or so of vinegar stirred in, and left to sit for a couple of minutes. The milk will thicken and sour, and will work fine. I often do this for soda bread recipes, because I don’t use buttermilk often enough to merit buying it by the quart.
