How to Make Buttermilk
Buttermilk is a flavoring agent widely used for baked goods and fruits. Its tangy sour taste enhances the flavor of cakes and mashed potatoes while its rich base makes salad dressings creamier. You can even use it as a marinate for fried food. With its plethora of culinary uses, knowing how to make buttermilk is a definite advantage in the kitchen.
Buttermilk is not Butter
Contrary to some beliefs, buttermilk does not contain butter nor butter’s fat content. It is composed of curdled milk and a few other items. The way milk is curdled can differ, with regard to the products used for curdling. Given its signature sour taste, some people substitute a mixture of milk and plain yogurt in its absence, but why substitute, when the real product is so simple to prepare?

You can use soy milk in place of whole milk. Soy milk produces a slightly different flavor, which adds a new dimension to preparing pastries and other baked products. As for the white vinegar, you can substitute it with 1 3/4 tbsps of cream of tartar, which diversifies the flavor even further.
