Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer and navigator who completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, opening the way for the widespread European exploration and colonization of the Americas. He completed his first voyage in 1492, sailing across the Atlantic with the intention of finding a new route to Asia. Instead, he landed in the Caribbean, on an island in the present-day Bahamas that he named San Salvador. He made three more voyages to the New World, exploring parts of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.
It's worth noting that Columbus's arrival in the America's led to the beginning of the genocide of the native population, the slave trade and other negative consequences. Many have also criticized Columbus for being responsible for the colonization of America, which brought displacement and displacement of indigenous people and the exploitation of resources.
