The most common would be seismographs and seismometers, which measure any type of movement in the Earth's crust (including volcanic eruptions). Volcanologists also use special instruments to measure volcanic gases (COSPEC), instruments that determine how the lava moves under ground, and a variety of cameras, GPS devices, and satellite imaging devices.
