George Clooney played the dark knight in "Batman & Robin" (1997) with Chris O'Donnell as Robin. The villains were Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman), Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Bane (Jeep Swenson). The film took Batman nearly to the level of cartoonishness of the old TV series, and was so badly criticized that it caused the end of the first "series" of movies, until the Christian Bale reboot in 2005.
