A sump pump can normally last seven years, provided it stays covered. An uncovered pit would allow things to fall in, blocking the full ability of the pump. It is normally the small pieces that cause the pump to break down because they are not very robust. Broken pumps require the switch and float to be tested. If there is a lack of suction, there is probably damage or blockage in the impeller. The best thing to do to keep from allowing a broken sump pump is to keep the cover secure and maintain the pump.If the pump is not performing up to par, more water should be poured into the sump pit. The pit will now have above normal levels of fluid. Then, turn the sump pump on to see what is not working. If the pump starts and the level of water goes down, the float and switch are working normally
