Its hard to think of modern life without the telephone. Today, nearly everyone has one and there are phones nearly everywhere. As such, there are many different kinds of telephone services. The kind of telephone service that people think of traditionally is referred to as landline telephone service. This is a service that allows people to communicate with each other through analog technology. The analog technology that is implemented for landline telephone services is copper telephone wiring. You have probably seen plenty of this wiring attached to big wooden telephone poles along roadways. This is the technology that descended directly from the discoveries of Alexander Graham Bell. The advantages of landline telephone services are uniform sound quality and the fact that the direct connections between callers do not use up a limited capacity. The second major kind of telephone service is wireless cellular telephone service. Unlike traditional landline telephone services, cellular implements radio waves to transmit communication as opposed to physical copper phone lines. Cellular also differs from traditional phone services in other ways. For one, wireless cellular services now have the ability to transmit data in addition to voice based communication. Regular landline telephone service does not provide this option. They also tend to differ because of the infrastructure that supports cellular services. There is much more competition in the cellular market due to the fact that different companies can set up towers to transmit their cellular services. Due to this fact, there are many different companies using many different networks that can offer many more options than what is available with traditional landline services. Lastly, there is the telephone service known as VoIP. VoIP stands for voice over internet protocol. This kind of phone service does not use its own infrastructure like landline and cellular phone services. Instead, VoIP uses a persons existing internet service to transmit telephone services. It works with both cable internet and DSL. For VoIP to work, something called an analog telephone adaptor needs to be obtained. This allows a person to connect their phone to their cable or DSL modem. Due to this fact, internet services and VoIP telephone services can often be bought together as part of a package deal.
