Deviance generally just means "different from the norm" or"taking a different path" and whatever you are comparing it to isessential to what it means on a larger scale.So, if you are talking about people who deviate from the law,then they could be the same thing as criminals. However, if you arejust talking about deviance from the norm, then people who areleft-handed or people who are any kind of minority would bedeviant, just because they are different, and that definitely isn'tthe same thing as criminality. Also, in that case, deviance wouldbe different depending on where you were. In Japan, a blonde wouldbe the deviant for instance.
