Following the civil war Radical Republicans in Congressintroduced a series of laws and amendments to secure civil andpolitical rights for former slaves. In 1867 Congress passed a lawrequiring the former confederate states to include black malesuffrage in their new state constitutions. Even though AfricanAmerican men began voting in the south after 1867, but the majorityof northern states denied them this basic right. In 1869 theRepublicans were ready to introduce the 15th amendment and inFebruary of 1869 Congress approved the amendment.
