Saturn’s ring system is both very broad and very thin. The inner edge of the rings begins approximately 6,700 km (4,200 mi) from the cloudtops of Saturn. The outer edge of the A ring is at approximately 76,500 km (47,600 mi) from the cloudtops of Saturn. The outer edge of the outermost ring (the E ring) has been measured out to about 420,000 km (260,000 mi) from Saturn’s cloudtops. This distance is greater than that between Earth and the Moon — 384,000 km (242,000 mi). It is likely that the rings extend even farther from Saturn in an ever-diminishing zone of fine, icy dust. In terms of thickness from top to bottom, the bright A and B rings may be as thin as a hundred meters — the length of a football field. At its outer edge, the E ring increases in thickness to several thousand kilometers.
