The Republican Party gained its way in 1860, because it won both of the houses in Congress. It became that way by the electors, the people to vote in.  So it gained power to the houses, and won. By a Republican man named Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican President to be in the White House. He was assassinated, and the Republican Party still remained to rule out.
