Why can't water drink from the sea during a shipwreck?

When, for example, a plane crashes and people stay in ruins and there is a terrible heat. Why not drink water from the sea? They would drink and they would be better not? It seems like a stupid joke that someone dies of thirst in the middle of the sea.
