It depends - you want to enjoy cycling or to be crippled or killed ...: o I bought my first helmet after the fall, when I was meziletmo´ heading between the trees (in the forest), I could clearly see that I was flying - and I clearly knew that I could fly even worse than cycling. It was like that in the 'fifties', so that in the end only the cervical vertebrae and hamstrings and the slightly torn skin on my legs, arms and back took it away, I take as the 'last' warning. Since then - I've bought a better bike, a good helmet - and I ride a little slower ...: o Yeah - a helmet is definitely suitable.
