The carnival period runs from water cross (January 6) to cremation Wednesday each year. The length of the carnival period varies from year to year, because although the crucifix always falls on the sixth of January, the cremation Wednesday falls at a different time with a relatively large difference. This is because Cremation Wednesday is calculated from the Feast of Easter, which says that Easter is the Sunday after the moon full moon, which can fall anywhere from year to year from March 22nd to April 25th. Ash Wednesday is the 40th day before Easter Sunday. In 2017, cremation Wednesday falls on February 10, so in 2017 the carnival period is between January 6 and February 10.
