How to Paint Ceilings
To add a lovely look to your ceilings, you give it a good coat of paint. Just like walls and other home installations, painting your ceilings give them a better aesthetic quality, as well as proper protection. Here’s how to do this home improvement chore.
What You’ll Need:
Ceiling paint
Roller tray or bucket
Drop cloths and newspaper
Roller grid
Paint roller with extension handle
Procedure:
Purchase the right type of ceiling paint from a hardware. Latex is the most commonly used type, but there are also specialist paints available for different ceilings, such as acoustic tile and texture coated kinds. If you’re unsure as to what brand and type to buy, ask help from an attendant. Pick a color that suits your space.

Remove light fixtures from the ceiling, and clear the room. Remove furniture, decorations and other items. For those that are too heavy to move, cover them with drop cloths. Make sure the whole floor area is covered with newspaper too, to protect it from paint drips.
Set up your stepladder. Using one with a platform for holding paint container or tools is a good choice. If you have a roller with an extension pole long enough to reach the ceiling, then you can do without the stepladder.
Make sure the paint you’re using has the right consistency. To test, try it on a vertical surface first. If the paint doesn’t doesn’t run, you’re good to go, but if it does, then you’ll have to thicken it more too avoid dripping.
Get the bucket or rolling tray. If you have a big ceiling to paint, you can put one to two gallons in the bucket, but if it’s fairly small, just use a roller tray and just refill it. Don’t fill the tray with too much paint, though.
Put your paint roller with the extension handle in the paint, submerging it completely. Afterwards, roll it on the roller grid, using a back and forth motion, so it won’t drip.
Start painting. It’s best if you begin in a corner (like near the windows), then diagonally roll the paint towards the opposite corner. Roll the paint roller in at least two square feet sized sections. When you paint, move towards the edge of the ceiling. When you need to replenish the paint on the roller, do it, so there will be even paint all over the surface.
Repeat for the other sections.
When the ceiling is fully painted, roll the roller over the entire ceiling, going in one direction. This will give it a smooth appearance.
Wait for your ceiling to dry completely before putting back light fixtures and other furniture.
Improve the look of your living space by painting your ceiling. It’s a pleasing addition to any room.
