How to Repair a Denim Comforter
Denim is one of the most popular fabrics available. While most people equate denim with jeans, denim makes a great fabric for many different items including denim jackets and denim comforters. While denim is an incredibly strong fabric, over time it can wear out, tear, become ripped or become faded. Here are some tips on repairing a denim comforter.
For most people, repairing a denim comforter is a simple process that doesn’t take that much time. In fact, repairing a denim comforter is quite similar to repairing any other type of denim item such as jeans. One thing to consider regarding a damaged denim comforter is to not wait too long until the rip, tear or damage is extensive. Once you see evidence of a tear or damage, fix the denim comforter as soon as possible. This will make your job much easier.
Fixing a Hole on a Denim Comforter
One of the traditional methods for fixing holes in denim involves the use of a denim patch. Denim patches come in a variety of colors that will hopefully match your comforter; applying them is extremely easy. Some patches can easily be ironed into place, others require simple stitching to hold them into place. For a small or medium hole that is unsightly, a denim patch is the perfect, low cost and simple solution to repair your favorite denim comforter.
It should also be noted that if you see a hole forming, a patch is a great way to reinforce an area that gets a lot of friction. In addition, for those that would like to use a patch to repair their denim comforters there are products that make the bond of the patch to the denim extremely strong (much stronger than just ironing). These products are available at most sewing shops.
Fixing Tears or Split Seams
In order to fix a denim comforter with a tear or split seam, you will usually need to use a sewing machine for best results. If the split seam is difficult to reach with your normal sewing machine, your best bet is to take your comforter to a tailor where they usually have sewing machines with an extended arm to reach the area in question. While hand-sewing is also an option, it can take a long time for most people to fix the hole, however, if you enjoy sewing and love your denim comforter, purchase denim thread that fits your comforter and proper needles. You can then hand-sew the seam or tear.
Fixing a Denim Comforter with Staining
Staining is common with all comforters. While normal stains are usually easy to remove by either washing the comforter at home or taking it to the dry cleaner, if you have a tough stain, you might want to look into purchasing products that specifically target denim stains. Many of these products are used mainly for high-end jeans, but denim is denim and they will most likely also work with your denim comforter.
