How to Fix a Door Hinge
A hinge, when bent or broken, makes a door hard to move. The door swivels unsteadily, presenting danger if more hinges get damaged. Before it falls over, you should fix the broken hinge or replace it with a new one. Fixing the hinge is simple. All you need is a screwdriver, pliers, possibly a new hinge, and an object sturdy enough to carry the door’s weight. The task is easier than it looks, so don’t worry.
Examine the Hinge
The hinge is found at the back of the door by the door frame. To locate the set of hinges, push the door open until you reach its limit. Check the hinges for damage. If you don’t find any damage, apply all-purpose oil on the hinges, which should solve the problem. If you find one or more hinges damaged, they must be removed then replaced.
Removing the Damaged Hinge
door hinge repairA door hinge is supported by three, four, or six screws spread through its surface. Check the screw heads of the damaged hinge then remove them with the appropriate screwdriver. Before removing the hinge, wedge a sturdy object, such as a wooden peg or a rubber stopper, beneath the door. Make sure is held steadily, or else the other hinges may get damaged as well. Once done, remove the damaged hinge and check the extent of its damage. If it’s only bent slightly, you can straighten it with pliers, otherwise it should be replaced.
Installing the New Hinge
Fit the new hinge into the slot provided. Make sure the screw slots are aligned to the holes. If the hinge has a different screw pattern, you can drill holes through the slots. Once the hinge is positioned, lift the door, in such a way, that the door’s connection point is lying flat on the hinge. The screw slots of the hinge and the connection point should expose the holes for the screws. Fit the screws into their slots then tighten them with a screwdriver. The door should move in one smooth motion at this point. If not, apply all-purpose oil on the hinges until the door moves freely.
Store Extra Hinges
Oil should be applied on the hinges, on occasion, to prevent damage. You don’t need to lubricate the hinges frequently, though. Applying once in a few months would do. Just purchase extra hinges, in case one or a few break down. They’re pretty cheap anyway.
