How To Hang A Door
Hanging a door can be one of the most effective methods of improving your home decor and furnishings. But it can be a challenging task if you do not have the right tools or do not know the basic techniques to execute the job. If a door is not hung in the correct way, then it may not shut properly or there may even be gaps alongside the door jambs.
Materials and Tools Needed
Drill
Skill saw
Measuring tape
Pencil
Sandpaper
Screws
Prehung door
Shims
Pneumatic nail gun
Level
Instructions
Before ordering a door, you need to measure the breadth of the opening, which should be 2 to 2½ inches wider than the door to be hung. If you have more space here, it will provide you with room for fitting the shims and the jambs into the opening of the door.
Before installing, measure the length of the prehung door jambs. Reduce the space by trimming under the door. Normally, a door should be clear off the floor by at least three-quarters of an inch.
Make sure that the floor is plumb. You will need to cut the jambs and the bottom of the door, if the floor is not plumb.
With the help of a pneumatic nail gun, install the casing on any one side of the frame of the door.
Fit the prehung door into the door opening.
Shut the door and tack the hinged side of the door with the door opening by using a pneumatic nail gun. Make sure that the hinge side is flush with the frame of the door.
Make sure that the reveals around the jamb and the door are even all around the way.
Then shim the door frame with the opposite side of the jamb of the door.
Place the shims properly, and tack the casing of the door with the door frame.
Recheck the door reveal.
Nail the other side of the casing of the door, and verify that the reveal is even.
Make sure that the door is at least three-quarter inches away from the floor. If not, you need to pop the hinges in order to release the door and trim its bottom to achieve the desired gap.
Reinstall the door, caulk the frame of the door casing, and put in the nail holes.
Now, you can paint the door with a color of your choice.
Tips and Warnings
The task may take 2 hours, especially if you are hanging a door for the first time. The more often it is done, the easier and quicker the task gets.
You must also check that the floor is level, so that you install the door properly at the first attempt.
Accurate level is vital for hanging a door. Therefore, plumb the level.
