How to Tile a Shower
Introduction
Tiling a shower does not need to be a difficult task. You can complete this process with some very simple steps. Paying a professional does not need to take place. You can save a lot of money doing this job yourself.
Supplies Needed
Grout
A tile cutting tool
Grouting supplies, IE grout, grout sponge and grout waterproof material
Spacers
Drill
Measuring tape
A trowel
Tile
Tile mastic
Prime the Walls
Before the tiles can be properly set, the walls need to be dealt with. Cement is usually the prime material on shower walls. For the tiles to sit evenly, you must make sure the walls are smooth.
If there are blemishes or cracks, these must be repaired before continuing the work.
Mix a small amount of cement, according to the directions on the package.
Use your trowel in small strokes to spread a fine layer of cement on the imperfections. Tend to all the damage at one time.
The cement needs to be even on every part of the wall for the tiles to sit correctly.
Let dry before you begin your tile preparation.
Preparing the Tiles
The first step is to measure around the shower and tub fixtures. You will need the width of these items.
Once the measurements are complete, select a few different tiles.
Mark the selected tiles with your measurements.
Begin using the tile cutter to remove the portions that you need to fit around the fixtures.
Keep your tile cutter handy for adjustments you may need to make before you set the tile.
Begin to Tile
Start from the top. Line your tiles on the wall. Make marks on the wall of the first two rows of tile. You may need to cut the ending pieces to fit on your wall.
Once the tiles have been outlined, use your tape measure to determine if any tiles need to be cut.
If you need to slim down the last tile, complete this step next.
It is imperative to cut a straight line on the tile for the perfect fit.
The next step is to use your trowel to have a flat, even surface of mastic on the wall.
This is fairly quick drying material. It is suggested that you only do two rows at a time.
Position the tile in even blocks on top of the mastic. It is important for a professional looking shower to use your spacers to evenly align the tile.
Continue steps 1 to 5 until all the tiles are situated on the wall.
The bottom of the shower may need to be measured just like the sides of the shower.
Let the tiles setup for at least 24 hours before grouting begins.
Start Grouting Procedures
There are several kinds of grout that can be purchased. Either self mixing or the type that is premade.
Use the sponge to press the grout tightly into the spaces between the tiles.
If you get grout on the tiles, no worries. Gently soak the sponge in warm water and clean the tiles before the grout sets.
Read how long you need to let the grout setup. This can be found directly on the package.
The last step is to use a waterproof grout sealer so it is tight fitting and no leakage will occur.
