How to Grow a Cactus
The cactus, being the prime shrub of the desert, does not require much tending to, as compared to other plants. It can survive under extremely hot and dry conditions for significant periods. However, just like any domestic plant, it still needs human attention to prolong its survival, not to mention beauty. Learn how to grow a cactus and it will soon increase your room’s aesthetic value.
Think Desert, When Planting the Cactus
The cactus is built for living in warm sunny environments, such as deserts and open plains. Keep that detail in mind when selecting a location for your cactus. You can set it in your lawn, by the window of your room or any location that is directly hit by sunlight. Since it is filled with water, make sure that the planting site has excellent drainage, or else your cactus might get smothered by too much water. Ideally, it should be placed it in a small container, so its survival can be monitored.
Extract the Seeds then Soak Them
cactusA cactus produces pods and flowers when it bears offspring. You can grow new cacti by extracting the seeds, which are located inside the pods, before the pods dry up. Use a sharp blade or knife to slice the pods open. With a popsicle stick or a small trowel, collect the seeds inside the pods and soak them in water for half a day. Transfer them to small containers filled with commercial cactus mix. Set the containers under direct sunlight. Once the soil right under the top layer dries out, water your cacti moderately. Transfer them to larger containers, perhaps your lawn when they grow bigger. Maintain this routine and you can propagate quite a number of cacti.
Place Fertilizer After Every Four Months
A cactus can survive in dry desert soil for years without much nourishment. Why settle for its survival, when you can make it healthier? After every four months, mix organic fertilizer with cactus mix or soil used to support the cactus. It will gradually look robust, as it is nourished by the nutrients found in the fertilizer and the enriched soil.
Bring the Cactus Indoors During Winter
The cactus is better off in your home rather than being surrounded with ice. During winter, bring your cacti home and set them by a window that receives direct sunlight. Provide water and fertilizer whenever necessary.
