How to Grow Ginger
Planning the Site
You can use a pot to grow your ginger in. Make sure that the pot is 3 to 4 times bigger than the ginger rhizome you will be planting. Ginger can grow on almost any soil; ordinary potting soil enriched with compost is good enough.
Since it will be planted in a pot, you will not have to worry about sunlight. You can always move your plant to a suitable spot. It is preferable to use clay pots, as these can provide good drainage for your ginger plant.
Preparing the Site
Enrich the potting soil with plenty of compost. Make sure you do this a few weeks before planting the ginger.
Required Materials
The materials required for growing ginger are basic garden tools and materials. You will also need a ginger root, a pot, potting soil and a glass of water.
Submerge one thirds of the ginger in the glass of water. Leave it in until the roots are about an inch long. After that, plant it on top of the soil and then cover it with a layer of soil an inch thick.
Move it to an area that has plenty of sunlight. Since it is in a pot and is mobile, you won’t have a hard time doing this.
Watering Requirements
Ginger doesn’t need much watering. However, you must keep the soil moist; be careful that it does not dry up.
Nutrients Required
If the potting soil was enriched before planting, you won’t need to add any fertilizer when the ginger is growing. All that it needs is adequate water and sunlight.
Seasons
Ginger is known to be stunted in growth during the cold seasons, but thrives during fall.
Expectations/Results
Planting ginger is not that difficult. Your ginger will be ready for harvest in just 4 to 5 months. Ginger plants grow to a height of 2 to 4 feet when they reach their maturity.
