Every fantastic basketball player knows how to dunk, but if you’re just a beginner at this maneuver, you’ll need to know how to properly do it, otherwise you might end up injuring yourself.
What You’ll Need:
Basketball shoes and athletic socks
Basketball jersey or loose clothing
Basketball court with hoops
Basketball
Procedure:
Add more height to your vertical leap. Your legs and their lifting power are the key elements to jumping high towards the basket. If you’re already tall, that’s a bonus. If not, you can try doing plyometrics and exercises, such as wall sits, weights, and squats. Gaining a few inches will take time though, but they’ll be very helpful when you try to reach the basket.

Get the proper basketball equipment. You’ll need a good pair of rubber shoes to improve your dunking ability and prevent you from getting hurt. Loose clothing, such as jerseys, is also recommended to help you move better.
Study the court. Get a feel for the floor by running around and doing a few jumps. Examine the hoop and see if you can manage its height. If you don’t think you’ll reach it, find an adjustable hoop. Many baskets today are equipped with this. Lower the basket so it’ll be easy for you to feel what it’s like to dunk. As you improve, you can raise it gradually.
Learn how to handle the ball properly, too. Find out how to use inertia to control it when you extend your arm. If your hands aren’t very big, try practicing two-handed dunking first.
Dribble towards the basket. You must try doing this with speed, since you’ll need this to accelerate your jump. As you are 10 to 12 feet away from the basket, pick up the ball. Take the allowed two steps.
After the second step, jump as high as you can. You can use just one foot or both, whichever makes you feel more comfortable. Grasp the ball with your two hands or palm it with your dunking hand.
Extending your arm towards the rim, then drive the ball through the net.
Don’t hang from the rim, unless there’s danger of landing on someone below on the court. If you do hang from the rim, hold onto it properly and firmly, with both hands.
Land on the ground with both feet.
A Few Reminders
When you practice doing dunks, make sure someone is around to keep an eye on you. If you are hurt with no one around, it’ll be very dangerous.
Start with a golf ball or tennis ball if you can’t grasp a basketball well. Once you get used to these, switch to a volleyball. Eventually, you’ll be able to handle the heavier basketball.
The ball can come back and hit your face, so be prepared for it. Don’t be afraid or your ability to dunk will be affected.
It’s not likely that you’ll dunk a ball perfectly on your first try. Keep practicing. Don’t feel embarrassed, because you’ll get get the hang of it soon.
