Gotham City has Batman. Metropolis has Superman. Keystone City has Flash. These fictional cities are home to our revered superheroes. However, in reality, every city and town has its own superheroes. They may not be gifted with certain superhuman abilities, they are just as heroic as your average comic book superhero.
Firefighters are underrated superheroes. They may not have a fancy car like Batman’s or be able to spin webs to swing from one building to another like Spiderman. Firefighters save lives and property in the best and fastest way possible. Equipped with a firehose, a firetruck, ladder and other gear and equipment, firefighters use certain skills in doing their jobs properly. If you plan on choosing firefighting as your noble career, you have to assess yourself and see if you have the following superhero abilities.
Physical Strength and Endurance
As a firefighter, you will be required to carry appropriate tools, wear protective gear and be equipped with a self-contained breathing apparatus. All these weigh a combined total of around 100 pounds. You will have to carry this weight with you as you perform many emergency tasks. You will also have to lift and carry victims and move bulky objects. These activities rely heavily on strong back and stomach muscles.
Fires and other emergencies do not choose a certain time to set a building in turmoil. They can occur even on the coldest of nights. Ergo, firefighters are exposed to various weather conditions. You will have to stand very cold and very hot temperatures. You should also be able to distinguish among colors such as colors of flame and smoke in order to determine the source or type of fire. It will also be helpful in identifying possible dangerous situations.
Spirit, Passion, and Personality
You also have to be dedicated to your work. Saving lives is not an easy task. You should have a lot of patience and confidence in dealing with emergency situations. You should also be very alert and be able to make quick decisions. Bravery is also a must. Entering a building on fire is something that not everyone would dare do. Determination, self-motivation and courage make ordinary people superheroes.
You should also have a great personality in order to maintain good relationships with your fellow firefighters. You have to get along with them because firefighting is a team effort. Everyone must work together. Justice League should inspire you.
Above all, you should have a good heart. You should feel empathic towards other people to understand what they need. However, you should be able to control your emotions so that your work would not be affected and your focus be diverted.
If you were disheartened a long time ago because you thought being a superhero is impossible, be pleased to know that it is not true. Being a superhero doesn’t mean flying with a cape wrapped around your neck. Be a firefighter. Be a superhero.
