First, you have to contact your local fire department. Ask them if they are in need of volunteers and how you can join the program.
Next, talk to other volunteers in your area. Listen to what they have to say about their work. Find out how much time is usually needed and how difficult it is. Ask them about the preparations that you have to take. You can also ask them what advantages and benefits will volunteering give you.
Measure your physical fitness level. You have to be physically able to do the job. The tasks that firefighters perform are physically demanding and challenging.
If you find everything to be satisfying, drop by the local fire department and fill out an application. You have to give them information about your medical history. You will also need to complete a few forms such as a beneficiary designation form and an employment verification form. The fire department will be asking you to complete an extensive training course.
Becoming a volunteer firefighter allows you to give back to your community. You will find countless reasons why you should not become one. However, the few reasons of pursuing an endeavor as noble as this will give you a sense of civic pride and an overwhelming feeling after being able to save lives.
