On April 21, 2019, simultaneous explosions were reported in three churches and three hotels in several cities, including Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka. The blast killed 189 people, including many foreigners. More than 459 people were injured in the bombing. The attack took place the day after Easter Sunday, at churches in Nigambo , Batticaloa and Colombo, and at the Shangri-La , Cinnamon Grand and Kingsbury hotels in Colombo. The incident marked the country's biggest terrorist attack since the end of Sri Lanka's civil war in 2009. Jayan Chowdhury, grandson of Awami League presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, was killed in the attack.
