(i) The Tonkin Free School was started in 1907 to provide a western-style education. This education included classes in science, hygiene and French. (ii) School Textbooks glorified the French and justified colonial rule. The Vietmanese were told that they were ‘skilled copyists’ but not creative. They could not rule themselves. The schools encouraged adoption of western styles and western ideas.
