During late nineteenth century in India, nationalists started the collection of folk lores. They travelled village to village to collect and record folk songs and legends sung by bards. They believed that these tales gave a real picture of true Indian culture, which was being distorted by the Britishers. They said this is our culture and identity and it restore a sense of pride in one’s past. In Bengal, Rabindranath Tagore started collecting ballads, nursery rhymes and myths. In Madras Natesa Shastri published a massive four volume collection of Tamil folk tales “Folklore of Southern India”.
