(i) Workers paid a jobber because he got jobs for them, helped them to settle in the city and provided them money in times of crisis. For these favours he was paid. (ii) The workers in the mill came from the villages or neighbouring districts. For example, 50% workers in the Bombay cotton industries in 1911 came from neighbouring districts of Ratnagiri, from mills of Kanpur, from surrounding districts of Kanpur. (iii) Most often mill workers moved between the villages and the city, returning to their village homes during harvests and festivals.
