The first section of the underground railway :n the world was opened on 10th January, 1863 between Paddington and Farrington street in London. (i)People were afraid to travel under ground. (ii)The compartments were overcrowded and polluted by smoke. (iii) The atmosphere was a mixture of sulphur, coal and dust with foul fumes from the gas lamps. (iv)Many felt that the iron monsters added to the mess and unhealthiness of the city, (v)Suffocation due to lack of oxygen supply and heat.
