Answer :

It sounds more like squirrels to me.  The squirrels in our yard bury their nuts for the winter and then go back when they need them and dig them up. They stay more in flower bed areas in our yard.  I have some flower pots that they tried to take over to bury nuts.  I had to put rocks on top of the soil in those pots to keep them away. Moles make small holes too and stay in the yard area more.
