Answer :

Branches die.  It just happens.  It happens to my red twig dogwood every year.  Cut back the dead branches to ground level.  Prune questionable branches back about six inches to see if the cambium layer is still green meaning the branch is alive.  If it is green leave the branch alone.  It should be fine next spring.
