Answer :

Rocks do gather the sun and they can heat up..... an inch or so of straw or hay could keep them from getting too ripe too soon.  Also there should be some big leaves around them to keep them cool.  When our have reached their peak growth cut the vine and leave about 12 inches on them and put them in a cool dry place to store or wait until holiday time.
