could be a racoon sleeping in there at night time....................racoons don't like pepper......hot sauce......sprinkle some in there don't want to hurt the tree..............depending how big this hole is you might need to take it down for safety...a big wind storm could bring it down.  It is possible that you could have carpenter ants....3 bodied     or termites....2 bodied.....
