I don’t think websites go smaller than 800 pixels anymore, though I’m guessing 1024 might be the norm right now. It helps to think of website design in terms of layers. The background is behind everything. The content is on top. The content is split into different parts: the header, footer, main body, right and left columns, etc. Each piece is designed separately, but should have a uniform look to tie the whole site together.
