It kind of sounds familiar, and my mom used to read me this story that started off: “Puppycat wasn’t a puppy, and Puppycat wasn’t a cat. Puppycat was a puppycat.” If I recall correctly, he did feel unloved or unwanted or something, and left. The family searched for him and the little girl cried, then Puppycat finally returned.
