I purchased my first Fire in 2012. Maybe I’ve just become immune but I don’t even notice their sales stuff. I don’t remember how it was on the 7 as far as their ads went; but you might want to verify that the cheap 7” actually has a MicroSD. The main reason that I purchased my current Fire 8 was that it had the expandable slot for a card. I can tell you that with my 8 that I’ve copied a ton of music onto the card & I can play it any time I want to hear it. Some of it is my music & some I have purchased from Amazon in the past. I’ve never tried to play my own movies on it so I won’t be much help there. I have watched some movies off Netflix & other movie apps. I’ve also not tried loading Android apps onto it as I find that Amazon offers their own apps that are equivalent to the Android. I’ve always purchased the WiFi Only version because I didn’t want to pay additional connection fees. I have mobile hotspot on my phone for those times that I need an internet connection & I’m not near one. I download any books or games onto the device so I don’t need an internet connection in order to use. I’m also a Prime member but don’t remember how that affects my Kindle. With my current 8, the main screen comes with an ad for something they hope to sell you but you only need to swipe up to get to the main menu screen. I seldom pay attention to what they’re offering & just automatically swipe up & then go on with what I want to do.
