Although Alaska shares a long border with Canada and is geographically separate from the contiguous 48 states, it’s never been part of Canada. The United States of America purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million, and it became the forty-ninth state in 1959. Russia had started colonizing Alaska in the 1700s, so it was never part of the French and British colonies that would eventually become Canada.
