The December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg was important in morethan one way. One of its outstanding factors, however, revolvedaround its casualty figures. This was the only Civil War battlewhere the defeated Federal forces had a casualty ratio of betterthan two to one over the Confederates. Federal casualties numberedapproximately 11,000 in comparison to the Confederate rate ofapproximately 5,000.
