The high ranking generals on both sides of the US Civil War wereall West Point graduates and this caused both armies to practicethe same maneuvers during the war. One example of this was howsoldiers marched. When not under stress from the enemy, troopsmarched at 90 steps per minute. On good roads this could beincreased to 110 steps per minute. If required, and in battle fieldsituations, men could go to double quick marching time. But, thiswas only possible for 15 minutes. The pace was then slowed untilthe rest period could be increased again to double quick timemarching. This method of marching was used by both sides, however, after a distance of 2 miles, troops had to abandon the acceleratedpace for a longer period of time, based on variouscircumstances.
